Rubio Lands in India, Unlocking USD500B Trade Pledge
(MENAFN) Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to New Delhi on Sunday, praising a "very deep, very broad-based cooperation" between the two nations as Rubio made his first official visit to the South Asian country.
Opening the bilateral talks, Jaishankar described the two countries as sharing "a comprehensive global strategic partnership" whose reach and influence extends well beyond their respective regions.
"And that is because we have converging interests on many issues and in many parts of the world," he said, acknowledging that the meeting was unfolding in "complicated times."
The warm reception belied a period of diplomatic friction. Relations between Washington and New Delhi had cooled over President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff agenda, which imposed steeper duties on Indian exports, as well as Trump's contentious claims regarding his personal role in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan the previous year.
Rubio, for his part, struck a forward-looking tone, describing the two nations as "strategic allies (which) is not simply committed to a region."
"We had … opportunities to cooperate globally, in the different regions of the world and that includes potentially … the western hemisphere," he added.
The four-day visit is centered on deepening collaboration across energy, trade and defense, according to officials familiar with the agenda. Rubio had touched down in India early Saturday, holding talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before proceeding to Sunday's ministerial meeting. His itinerary also includes stops in the historic cities of Agra and Jaipur, before he participates in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue — commonly known as the Quad — on Tuesday.
The visit yielded an early and significant headline. Following Saturday's discussions, Rubio announced that India had "committed to purchasing $500 billion in US goods over the next five years focusing on energy, technology, and agriculture" — a pledge that signals a potentially transformative shift in bilateral commercial ties at a moment when both sides are working to recalibrate the relationship.
