Tanker Near Yemen’s Socotra Avoids Incident After Armed Security Response

(MENAFN) A products tanker navigating waters west of Yemen’s Socotra Island was approached by a small boat carrying five individuals, though the craft later changed direction after armed guards aboard the ship were activated, according to maritime reports released Saturday.

The incident reportedly occurred within 200 nautical miles west of Socotra. Authorities stated that the small vessel came as close as 100 meters to the tanker before retreating.

"The Master of a products tanker has reported that the vessel was approached by a small craft with 5 persons onboard, closest point of approach 100m.

"The vessel’s Armed Security Team were deployed and the small craft altered course away from the reporting vessel," the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said in a statement posted on X.

No additional information was immediately released regarding the identity of the individuals or the nature of the approach.

The incident followed another maritime security report issued Friday involving a tanker positioned roughly 98 nautical miles north of Socotra.
