Pope Leo Expresses Concern Over Lebanon and Regional Churches
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Monday voiced “deep concern” regarding the situation in Lebanon and the condition of Christian churches throughout the Middle East during talks with Catholicos Aram I, according to reports.
“I assure you of my daily prayers and of the deep concern I feel for the people of Lebanon and for the churches of the Middle East,” the pope said during the meeting with Aram I.
During the discussion, Pope Leo referred to his trip to Lebanon last December and praised the country’s longstanding history of coexistence between different religious communities.
He stated that Lebanon is currently enduring “severe trials” and cautioned that the country’s unity and territorial integrity are once again facing serious challenges.
According to the Vatican, the jurisdiction of Aram I extends across Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf region, Iran, Greece, and the Americas. The Catholicosate has been based in Antelias, Lebanon, since 1930.
Reports noted that the private audience represented the first official visit by Catholicos Aram I to Pope Leo XIV.
