Explosion at New York Dry Dock Leaves One Dead, Dozens Injured
(MENAFN) At least one person has been killed and more than 30 others injured after a fire and explosion at a dry dock facility in New York City on Friday, according to reports citing police and fire officials.
The incident took place at a shipyard on Richmond Terrace in the Mariners Harbor area of Staten Island.
The Fire Department of New York said crews were called in the afternoon after reports of a basement fire inside a metal structure near the shipping docks, with workers reportedly trapped inside.
A large explosion later occurred while firefighters were attempting to bring the blaze under control, according to local media reports.
At a press briefing, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the fire had been contained but confirmed that one civilian was killed and two firefighters were in critical but stable condition.
Officials said at least 13 firefighters were injured in the incident, including two who suffered serious injuries and two with moderate injuries. Several others, along with two emergency medical service personnel, sustained minor injuries.
