Paris Launches Investigation into Childcare Abuse Allegations

(MENAFN) Authorities in Paris have opened a wide-ranging investigation into the city’s childcare and after-school system following serious allegations of sexual abuse involving young children, according to reports from French media.

Paris officials have acknowledged what they describe as a “systemic risk” to child safety and have announced an emergency reform package worth approximately €20 million ($23 million). The measures reportedly include enhanced staff training, unannounced inspections, and stricter rules preventing adults from being left alone with children.

The inquiry comes amid growing public concern over safeguarding failures in educational and childcare institutions. City leadership has also confirmed the suspension of dozens of after-school workers, including individuals removed over suspected misconduct, as part of ongoing internal reviews.

The scandal has triggered widespread shock after allegations emerged involving very young victims, with some reports indicating children as young as three were affected. Parents and advocacy groups have raised concerns about supervision failures, understaffing, and weak vetting procedures, as well as claims that problematic staff were sometimes reassigned rather than dismissed.

Investigations have expanded across multiple childcare and educational facilities in the city, with prosecutors examining dozens of cases involving nurseries, primary schools, and daycare centers.

Law enforcement units specializing in juvenile protection have also carried out coordinated operations linked to the wider probe, detaining multiple individuals employed in after-school programs. Those detained reportedly include a range of childcare staff and supervisors working in city-run programs, with allegations spanning severe forms of misconduct.

Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as officials seek to determine the full extent of institutional failures and individual responsibility within the system.
