US Senator Condemns Ben-Gvir Over Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) Two US senators on Wednesday sharply criticized Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his treatment of activists detained after participating in a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying humanitarian aid.

Senator Jeff Merkley described the conduct as unacceptable, responding on X by saying, “Ben-Gvir's treatment of these detainees is disgusting and inhumane.”

He added that the situation in Gaza helps explain why activists feel compelled to take action, noting, “When we see images of Gaza—destroyed communities and desperate families—we know why people are called to action,”

Senator Chris Van Hollen also condemned the minister’s actions, arguing that Ben-Gvir should have already faced sanctions from the United States.

“This is how National Security Minister Ben-Gvir treats detainees when he knows the cameras are rolling — to say nothing of what happens to Palestinians behind closed doors. This conduct is abhorrent," he wrote on X.

Both senators, members of the Democratic Party, have been among the more vocal critics in Congress regarding Israel’s policies and strong advocates for Palestinian rights.
