Turkey Calls for Global Action to Protect Civilians in Armed Conflicts

(MENAFN) Ahmet Yıldız has urged the international community to strengthen protections for civilians in armed conflicts and ensure consistent enforcement of international humanitarian law across global crises.

Speaking during an open session of the UN Security Council on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict, the Turkish envoy emphasized that safeguarding non-combatants must remain a shared global priority.

“Protection of civilians in armed conflict is a shared responsibility and must remain a top priority for the international community,” he said.

According to reports, Yıldız also warned against selective or uneven application of international legal standards, arguing that inconsistency weakens global institutions and undermines trust in multilateral systems.

“Selective approaches to international law undermine the credibility of the international legal system and erode confidence in multilateral institutions.”

He referenced historical grievances related to Cyprus, stating that Turkish Cypriots experienced periods of displacement and violence in the 1960s, and asserted that these events are recorded in United Nations archives.

Shifting to current conflicts, he highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing conditions as extremely severe even in the context of ongoing ceasefire efforts, and reiterated support for advancing a two-state solution as a pathway toward lasting peace.

According to reports, Türkiye also linked its broader remarks to other global crises, including Sudan, stressing the need for urgent and coordinated international action to protect civilians in all conflict zones.
