UN Chief Hails Resolution on States’ Climate Change Responsibilities
(MENAFN) António Guterres has welcomed a new United Nations General Assembly resolution reaffirming countries’ responsibilities to address climate change, following guidance linked to an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice.
According to reports, the resolution was adopted with broad support in the General Assembly, reflecting international backing for clarifying legal and political duties in tackling the climate crisis.
Guterres said the development marked a significant moment for international cooperation, stating: "The world’s highest court has spoken. Today, the General Assembly has answered."
He described the resolution as a strong endorsement of international law and climate justice, adding that it reinforces scientific consensus and the obligation of states to protect populations facing worsening climate impacts.
"The measure is a powerful affirmation of international law, climate justice, science, and the responsibility of states to protect people from the escalating climate crisis."
The UN chief also highlighted the role of small island states and youth climate activists in pushing the issue forward, particularly those most vulnerable to rising sea levels and extreme weather.
"Those least responsible for climate change are paying the highest price. That injustice must end," Guterres further renewed calls for a global shift away from fossil fuels, which he described as the main driver of the climate emergency, and emphasized that renewable energy has become the most affordable and reliable option for future energy systems.
