Colombia’s President Sparks Diplomatic Row After Calling Israeli Minister “Nazi”

(MENAFN) Gustavo Petro has strongly criticized Israeli officials after footage surfaced showing detained humanitarian activists, escalating diplomatic tensions between Colombia and Israel.

The controversy emerged after the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy reportedly carrying around 430 international volunteers attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza. The operation was carried out by the Israeli Navy, which seized the vessels and detained those on board.

The most widely circulated video was posted by Itamar Ben-Gvir, showing restrained activists in a detention setting after being brought to the port of Ashdod. The footage sparked immediate international criticism due to its depiction of detainees bound, kneeling, and processed under heavy security presence.

In response, Petro issued a sharp public condemnation on social media, directly targeting the Israeli minister. He stated:

“State Minister Ben-Gvir is acting like a true Nazi,” Petro wrote on his account on the US social media company X. “That’s how he treated our fellow citizens, simply because they wanted to stop the genocide in Gaza.”

The video itself reportedly shows Ben-Gvir moving through the facility carrying a large Israeli flag while surrounded by detained individuals restrained with handcuffs and positioned on the ground. At one point, as music played in the background, the clip included the caption “Welcome to Israel.” It also captured an incident in which a detainee who shouted “Free Palestine” was immediately forced down by security personnel.

According to reports, the detainees included citizens from more than 45 countries, among them several Colombian nationals, as well as public figures such as the sister of Ireland’s president. Some activists are said to have begun a hunger strike, arguing that their interception in international waters amounted to unlawful seizure.

The incident has intensified international scrutiny, prompting additional political reactions and a response from Benjamin Netanyahu, who moved to address the diplomatic fallout as criticism of the operation continues to grow.
