Over 125,000 Skin Infection Cases Recorded in Gaza, UN Warns

(MENAFN) Over 125,000 skin infection cases tied to rats and parasites have been recorded across the Gaza Strip in just the first five months of 2026, the UN Palestine Agency warned Thursday, painting an alarming picture of accelerating public health deterioration in the besieged enclave.

Israel's ongoing military campaign in the blockaded territory has fueled rampant disease outbreaks and an explosive surge in rodent populations.

"Another crisis in the Gaza Strip. Rats and parasites are surging. Skin infections are spreading. Risk of disease is increasing," UNRWA said on the US social media platform X.

The agency revealed the scale of its overstretched medical response, stating that "hundreds of UNRWA medical personnel are treating around 400 cases a day, but they could do more if they received adequate quantities of medications."

Quantifying the crisis further, UNRWA stated that "over 125,000 cases of skin infections related to rats and parasites were reported between January and May 2026 in the Gaza Strip," before issuing a direct plea to the international community: "Supplies need to be allowed into Gaza at scale."

Gaza's Health Ministry reported that at least 877 Palestinians have been killed and 2,602 others wounded since a ceasefire was declared in October 2025. Since the war's outbreak in October 2023, the Israeli army has killed more than 72,000 people — predominantly women and children — and injured over 172,000, according to the ministry.

Notwithstanding the ceasefire announced last October, Israel has continued to throttle the flow of agreed humanitarian aid into the territory, where approximately 2.4 million Palestinians — among them 1.5 million displaced individuals — are enduring severe and worsening humanitarian conditions.
