UN Reports Worsening Ukraine War with Surge in Civilian Deaths

(MENAFN) According to United Nations officials, the conflict in Ukraine has escalated further across multiple fronts, with mounting civilian deaths, continued strikes affecting aid operations, and growing financial gaps that are weakening relief efforts.

Speaking before the Security Council, Kayoko Gotoh, who heads the Europe and Central Asia Division within the UN’s political and peace operations departments, described the situation in stark terms, stating: "Well into its fifth year, the war in Ukraine is becoming deadlier by the day."

She highlighted that civilian harm has continued to rise sharply, noting that in the previous month alone at least 238 people were killed and 1,404 were injured. She added that this figure represents "the highest monthly number of civilian casualties recorded since July 2025," describing the trend as "a continuing pattern of rising civilian harm."

UN-verified figures cited since February 2022 indicate that at least 15,850 civilians have been killed, including 791 children, while a further 44,809 have been injured, according to the organization’s human rights monitoring data.

Gotoh also referenced a recent wave of aerial attacks, describing it as "one of the largest" since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

She further emphasized the UN’s position on attacks impacting non-combatants and infrastructure, saying: "We strongly condemn all attacks against civilian and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur."
