Israel Intercepts Majority of Gaza-Bound Flotilla Vessels

(MENAFN) Israeli forces have taken control of more than 40 vessels belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla headed toward Gaza, according to reports citing Israeli media.

The operation also led to the detention of roughly 300 activists, as reported by an Israeli news site, which cited an unnamed security source.

Walla added that not all of the 54 ships involved in the flotilla had been intercepted, noting that several vessels were still at sea at the time of reporting.

The interception reportedly began on Monday in international waters, targeting a convoy carrying humanitarian aid and triggering criticism and condemnation from multiple international actors, according to reports.

The flotilla, made up of 54 boats, had departed earlier from the Turkish district of Marmaris on Thursday in an effort to reach Gaza.

It was the latest in a series of similar maritime missions attempting to reach the territory by sea.
