Taiwan Legislature Rejects Impeachment Bid Against President
(MENAFN) An impeachment motion targeting Taiwanese leader William Lai was defeated on Tuesday in what marked the first-ever presidential impeachment vote in the island’s constitutional history, according to reports citing local media.
The motion did not reach the required two-thirds majority in Taiwan’s 113-seat Legislative Yuan, where 56 lawmakers supported it and 50 opposed it, while seven members did not cast ballots, according to a media outlet.
The attempt was initiated by opposition parties, including the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People’s Party, following a political dispute after Premier Cho Jung-tai declined to countersign opposition-backed amendments concerning government revenue distribution laws.
The opposition, holding a combined parliamentary majority, had moved forward with impeachment proceedings in December last year. The vote took place just one day before Lai marked his second anniversary in office.
