Pakistan PM Discusses Regional Crisis With Qatari Counterpart
Sharif wrote on X on Monday, May 18, that the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation and emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the only path toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
Pakistan has recently intensified efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran amid fears of a wider regional conflict.
As part of those efforts, Pakistani Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi visited Iran two days ago to convey Tehran's views regarding the negotiations to Washington.
The diplomatic push comes as Reuters recently reported that Pakistan deployed 8,000 troops, around 16 JF-17 fighter jets, drone squadrons and HQ-9 air defense systems to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defense agreement, reflecting growing regional security concerns linked to tensions with Iran.
Despite its close defense ties with Saudi Arabia and Gulf allies, Pakistan has continued to position itself as a mediator, seeking to prevent further escalation between Tehran and Washington.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply increased over Tehran's nuclear program, regional activities and fears of possible military confrontation in the Gulf region. Several countries, including Qatar and Pakistan, have called for diplomacy to avoid a broader conflict.
Pakistan and Qatar maintain close political and economic relations, and both countries have frequently coordinated on regional crises. Qatar has also played an important mediation role in several international conflicts and negotiations in recent years.
