Turkey Condemns Interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla as “Piracy”
(MENAFN) Hakan Fidan has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, describing the operation in international waters as “piracy” and a violation of international law.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Berlin alongside German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Fidan said Turkey is coordinating with countries whose nationals were on board and is working to secure the release of Turkish citizens detained during the incident.
He stated that the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza and included participants from roughly 40 countries, was unlawfully targeted while en route to break the blockade on the territory.
Fidan also linked the incident to broader regional instability, arguing that long-term peace and stability depend on resolving the Palestinian issue through a two-state solution framework.
He accused Israel of pursuing policies that worsen regional tensions, claiming that the conflict has expanded beyond Gaza to affect areas including the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, with wider implications for global security.
He further warned that instability in the region could have knock-on effects beyond the Middle East, including influencing migration flows and energy security in Europe.
Reports indicate that Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla—composed of more than 50 vessels—while it was heading toward Gaza, detaining around 100 activists involved in the mission.
