Iran Reports Air Defense Activation Over Island Near Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Iranian authorities say their air defense systems were activated overnight after what they described as “hostile drones” were detected over Qeshm Island, near the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media reports.

Initial reporting from the semi-official Mehr News Agency indicated that air defense systems were deployed late Monday on the island. Later, Tasnim News Agency, citing informed sources, reported that the activation followed the detection of unidentified drones in the area.

A provincial official in Hormozgan was quoted as saying the drones were described as “American-Israeli hostile drones,” and that Iranian forces engaged them in response.

Authorities said the sounds heard on the island were linked to air defense operations and attempts to intercept the drones. Officials added that the situation remained stable and under control, stressing that Iranian armed forces remain on full alert.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, and the incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following earlier military confrontations involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached earlier in April through mediation efforts, reports indicate continued instability and sporadic security incidents in the region.
