Germany Calls for Stronger EU–Turkey Strategic Ties

(MENAFN) Germany has urged closer cooperation between the European Union and Türkiye, saying expanded strategic ties would benefit both sides, according to reports.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made the remarks in Berlin during a joint appearance with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, following talks under the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism between the two countries. The discussions focused on EU–Türkiye relations, economic cooperation, and security and defense issues.

Wadephul said it is in Germany’s interest to further develop the relationship between Türkiye and the EU, particularly in areas of shared priorities.

“From the German government’s perspective, it is highly desirable that we continue to expand the strategic relations between Türkiye and the European Union -- particularly in those areas where we pursue shared interests,” he said, highlighting defense and security cooperation.

He also stressed Türkiye’s role as a NATO ally and major EU trading partner, arguing that it should be properly considered in the development of EU defense policy and industrial initiatives aimed at strengthening Europe’s military capabilities.
