Israel's Opposition Parties Push to Dissolve Knesset

(MENAFN) Israeli opposition parties mounted a unified push Monday, urging parliamentarians to back a bill that would dissolve the Knesset — with a preliminary vote expected as early as next Wednesday.

In a joint statement, opposition leaders made their demand explicit, calling for an immediate path to the ballot box: "instead of continuing to support a dysfunctional Knesset, we call on everyone to support the proposal of dissolving the Knesset, which will be presented next Wednesday, and to go to the polls as soon as possible."

The move carries immediate political weight. According to The Times of Israel, the ruling coalition pulled all of its bills from Monday's parliamentary session ahead of the anticipated vote — a sign of the pressure bearing down on the government.

The exact timeline for the bill's passage remains uncertain, though it is widely expected to move swiftly through the legislature. Following preliminary approval, the bill would be referred to committee before returning for three full plenary readings ahead of becoming law.

Should the Knesset be dissolved, Israel would be propelled into early elections — unless the vote coincides with the current parliament's legally mandated expiry date of October 27. General elections are already scheduled for that month.

The ruling coalition had itself submitted a dissolution bill on May 13, amid a crisis over ultra-Orthodox military conscription — a move widely interpreted as a preemptive strike against the opposition's own efforts.

Yisrael Beiteinu party leader Avigdor Lieberman issued a stark warning Thursday, cautioning that Prime Minister Netanyahu could resort to military action for electoral gain as dissolution talk intensifies — remarks made against the backdrop of Israel's ongoing ceasefire violations in Gaza and southern Lebanon, continued territorial expansion on both fronts, and escalating rhetoric toward Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza.

The opposition has long demanded early elections, a call Netanyahu has consistently rebuffed. The Prime Minister has faced an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant since 2024 on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, where more than 72,000 people — predominantly women and children — have been killed since October 2023.
