Mexico Urges Protection of Detained Sumud Flotilla Citizens

(MENAFN) Mexico on Monday urged Israeli officials to uphold the rights of two Mexican citizens who were apprehended after the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla near Cyprus. The appeal came amid growing concern over the welfare of the activists following the maritime operation.

In an official statement, Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Alvarez emphasized the importance of safeguarding the detainees’ rights and ensuring their well-being. “We demand, particularly from the Israeli authorities, full respect for the human rights of our fellow citizens detained in connection with the Global Sumud Flotilla. We reaffirm the need to guarantee their physical safety, dignified treatment, and immediate consular access, in compliance with international law,” he stated in the press release.

According to reports, the volunteers were seized by Zionist forces during daylight hours while traveling approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza. The incident has sparked international attention and criticism from activists supporting humanitarian efforts in the region.

One of the detained Mexicans, social psychologist Sol Gonzalez Eguia, released a video message describing the alleged assault carried out by Israeli forces against the flotilla. “If you are watching this, Israeli occupation forces have kidnapped me in international waters. I am part of a nonviolent civilian mission sailing to break the illegal siege, deliver aid, and stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza,” Gonzalez Eguia declared in footage circulated across social media platforms.

The second Mexican activist, Violeta Nunez, also published a statement informing supporters about the interception conducted by Israeli military personnel. In her remarks, the professor and journalist condemned the operation and called for international action. “My kidnapping once again shows how far the Israeli regime and its sponsors are willing to go to continue their siege and genocide. The world must rise up,” she said.
