Spanish Lawmakers Condemn Israeli Strike on Gaza Aid Flotilla

(MENAFN) Spanish lawmakers strongly criticized Israel on Monday following the interception of the Global Sumud aid flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters, according to reports.

Politicians from Spain’s Podemos party accused Israeli forces of targeting and detaining activists aboard the humanitarian convoy, which was attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza.

Party leader Ione Belarra wrote on X that Israel had intercepted the flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea and detained participants, while also accusing European governments of complicity.

“Israel is attacking and kidnapping the Global Sumud Flotilla right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. And it does so with total impunity while Europe continues to be complicit with the genocidaires,” she said.

She also called for public demonstrations in Madrid to protest the interception and support the mission.

Separately, MEP Irene Montero also condemned the operation, stating that humanitarian vessels carrying aid to Gaza were being intercepted without international intervention, and criticizing both European governments and institutions for their response.

According to reports, Israeli forces boarded the Global Sumud humanitarian convoy in international waters and detained around 100 activists as it attempted to reach Gaza amid efforts to challenge the blockade on the enclave.

The flotilla, made up of more than 50 boats, had departed earlier from the Turkish Mediterranean port of Marmaris on Thursday, aiming to break the long-standing blockade imposed on Gaza since 2007.
