Irish President’s Sister Gets Detained in Gaza-Bound Flotilla

(MENAFN) An Irish presidential relative is among activists detained after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters, according to reports on Monday.

Margaret Connolly, the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, was reportedly among at least six Irish citizens taken into custody during the operation targeting the Global Sumud flotilla, according to the Irish Independent and activist accounts.

Organizers of the flotilla said that Israeli forces boarded multiple vessels from a 60-boat convoy while it was sailing toward Gaza. They stated that 10 ships were intercepted roughly 70 nautical miles off the coast of Cyprus, with several participants detained.

The group also said that at least six of the 15 Irish participants were among those taken.

Video messages released by organizers appeared to show activists, including Connolly, recorded prior to the interception. In one of the recordings, she said: “If you are watching this video, it means I have been kidnapped from my boat in the flotilla by the Israeli occupying forces, and I’m now being held illegally in an Israeli prison,” Connolly said.

“I am so proud to be taking part in this flotilla - it is the largest to date,” she added.

According to reports, Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud humanitarian convoy in international waters and detained around 100 activists as it attempted to reach Gaza amid efforts to challenge the blockade on the enclave.
