Rwanda Closes Key Border Crossings With DRC Over Ebola Outbreak Concerns

(MENAFN) Authorities in Rwanda have temporarily closed border crossings linking the Rubavu District with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following an Ebola outbreak in the neighboring country, according to reports.

Officials in Rubavu said the closure affects the Goma–Gisenyi border points and will remain in place indefinitely as a precautionary measure aimed at limiting the potential spread of the disease.

The district mayor, Prosper Mulindwa, stated that the decision was taken to protect public health and that authorities would continue engaging with local communities to explain the restrictions.

He also urged residents to remain cooperative, emphasizing that the measure is intended to reduce the risk of infection and safeguard surrounding populations.

Despite the closure, health screening procedures remain in place for individuals crossing between the two countries. Rwandan citizens returning from the DRC, as well as Congolese travelers, are still permitted to move through designated points under strict monitoring protocols.

The decision comes amid growing concern over the latest Ebola outbreak in the DRC, where the death toll has reportedly reached 87. Health authorities have warned that the outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain, for which no strain-specific vaccine is currently available, raising concerns about possible regional spread.
