Saudi Arabia Intercepts, Destroys Three Drones Entering from Iraq
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday evening that its air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed three drones after they crossed into its airspace from Iraq.
According to Defense Ministry spokesperson Turki al-Maliki, the drones were brought down earlier on Sunday morning following their entry from Iraqi territory into Saudi airspace.
Al-Maliki emphasized that the kingdom “reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place.”
He further stated that Saudi Arabia “will take and implement all necessary operational measures to respond to any attempt to violate the kingdom’s sovereignty, security and the safety of its citizens and residents,” underlining a firm stance on protecting national security.
The incident comes amid heightened regional instability that has intensified since the US and Israel carried out strikes against Iran in February. In response, Tehran launched retaliatory attacks targeting Israel and several US allies in the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, and also moved to close the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was introduced on April 8 through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, but subsequent negotiations in Islamabad did not result in a durable settlement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.
