Zane Goebel

I am a linguistic anthropologist with a long-term interest in Indonesia. Linguistic anthropology is a multidicsiplinary endevour that sees language as part of social action and seeks to understand how everyday mundane instances of communication create and reproduce social relationships from the perspective of those doing the talking. I have worked in urban neighbourhoods in Semarang, government offices, and on traditional media and social media, political campaign signage, and most recently tidal flooding in Java since 1993. I have published three monographs on these topics with Cambridge and Oxford University Presses, four edited books, and a long list of academic articles.
