Iran Names Parliament Speaker as Special Envoy to China


(MENAFN) Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf has reportedly been appointed as Iran’s special envoy to China, according to reports citing informed sources familiar with the decision.

The new role is expected to place Qalibaf in charge of coordinating various Iranian state institutions on matters related to relations with China, as stated in reports carried by Iranian media.

According to the same reports, the appointment was proposed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and later approved by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Sources cited in the reports indicated that the position grants Qalibaf a broader level of authority than previous representatives assigned to similar responsibilities, reflecting the strategic importance Tehran places on its ties with Beijing.

No details were provided regarding whether Qalibaf will continue serving simultaneously as speaker of the Iranian parliament following the appointment.
