UK Minister Says Starmer’s Leadership Bid Is Personal Choice
(MENAFN) According to reports, UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has said it is a “personal decision” for Sir Keir Starmer whether he chooses to contest any potential Labour leadership challenge.
Speaking in an interview, Nandy said Starmer had “shown before that he's up for a fight” and added that “I wouldn't write off the prime minister,” despite growing political pressure within the party.
The comments come after recent turbulence in Labour ranks, with nearly 90 MPs reportedly calling for Starmer to step down and five ministers resigning from government positions.
Nandy also expressed support for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, suggesting he should be “back in Parliament at the heart of power.” Burnham is expected to stand for Labour in the Makerfield by-election and is widely seen as a possible leadership contender should he enter Parliament.
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting confirmed he would participate in any future leadership race following his resignation as health secretary earlier in the week.
Under party rules, Starmer would automatically be included on the ballot if a leadership election is triggered, and he has indicated that he would stand if such a contest takes place, according to reports.
