Drone Strike Sparks Fire Near Abu Dhabi Nuclear Facility

(MENAFN) A fire erupted near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi following a reported drone strike, according to statements released by Emirati authorities on Sunday.

Officials said the incident occurred in an electrical generator located outside the plant’s inner security perimeter in the Al Dhafra region. According to authorities, emergency teams responded quickly after the fire broke out.

The Abu Dhabi Media Office stated that “Authorities in Abu Dhabi responded to a fire incident that broke out in an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra Region, caused by a drone strike.”

Authorities added that no injuries were recorded and confirmed that radiation safety levels were unaffected by the incident. Officials also stated that all necessary precautionary measures had been implemented following the strike.

According to statements attributed to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, the fire did not compromise the operational safety of the nuclear facility or affect the readiness of its critical systems, with all plant units reportedly continuing to function normally.

No official information was released regarding the origin or party responsible for the drone strike.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year. According to reports, Tehran later responded with strikes targeting Israel and several US-aligned Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates, while tensions around the Strait of Hormuz also intensified.

A ceasefire was later reached through mediation efforts led by Pakistan and took effect on April 8, though subsequent negotiations in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a permanent agreement. Reports also stated that US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.
