Trump Cautions Taiwan Over Formal Independence Move
(MENAFN) According to reports, US President Donald Trump has cautioned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China, making the remarks shortly after concluding a two-day summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking to a media outlet on Friday, Trump said, “I'm not looking to have somebody go independent,” referring to Taiwan at the end of his meeting with Xi.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has previously maintained that Taiwan does not need to formally declare independence, as it already considers itself a sovereign state.
The United States has long maintained support for Taiwan, including a legal obligation to provide it with defensive capabilities, while also balancing this commitment with its diplomatic relationship with China.
Trump also stated earlier that he had “made no commitment either way” regarding the island, which Beijing claims as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to take control of.
Washington’s longstanding policy does not support Taiwanese independence and ties with Beijing have been linked to its acceptance of the “one China” principle.
Beijing has repeatedly expressed opposition to Taiwan’s leadership, previously describing President Lai as a “troublemaker” and a “destroyer of cross-strait peace,” according to reports.
