Trump-Backed Candidate Ousts Impeachment Senator
(MENAFN) According to reports, a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump has defeated a two-term Republican senator who had voted to convict the president during his 2021 impeachment trial.
Congresswoman Julia Letlow is set to advance to a runoff election next month after unseating incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy, whom Trump had previously described as a “disloyal disaster” ahead of a closely watched contest in Louisiana on Saturday.
State Treasurer John Fleming, also aligned with Trump, secured a place in the Republican runoff for the state’s Senate seat as well.
With no candidate achieving a majority, Letlow and Fleming will face each other again in a runoff scheduled for late June. The winner will go on to compete against the Democratic nominee in the general election.
Cassidy, 68, was among seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump following the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack during his impeachment trial. Trump was later acquitted after the Senate vote fell short of the two-thirds majority required.
Of those seven Republicans, only three remain in the Senate: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who survived a primary challenge in 2022; Susan Collins of Maine; and Cassidy himself.
Fleming previously served as a US representative for Louisiana and worked in the Trump administration, while Letlow, 45, is noted as the first Republican woman elected to represent Louisiana in Congress, according to reports.
