UK Sends New Low-Cost Missile System to Mideast to Boost Drone Defenses

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United Kingdom has deployed a new, relatively inexpensive missile capability to the Middle East as part of efforts to improve defenses against drone threats targeting “UK forces, citizens and regional partners.”

In an official statement, it was said that the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) has been integrated into RAF Typhoon fighter jets operating in the region. The upgrade enables the aircraft to intercept and destroy drones and other aerial threats at “a fraction of the price” compared with the missiles previously used.

"The system has now been deployed on operations in the Middle East with sorties flown by 9 Squadron RAF Typhoon fighter jets as part of the missions to defend British people, interests and partners from threats," it noted.

Luke Pollard, the minister for defense readiness and industry, highlighted the rapid rollout of the capability, saying: “This has been a superb effort working with industry to test and deploy this system in a matter of months, which will help the RAF shoot down many more drones at a much lower cost.”
