Trump Says ISIS Deputy Leader Killed in Nigeria Operation

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has announced that a senior figure in Islamic State was killed in an operation in Nigeria, according to reports.

Trump said that Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as the group’s second-in-command globally, was eliminated in a coordinated mission involving US and Nigerian forces.

According to reports, the operation took place in the Lake Chad Basin region and was presented as a joint strike targeting an Islamic State compound where several militant figures were reportedly located.

Trump stated that the mission was “a meticulously planned and very complex” operation and claimed it was conducted with assistance from local intelligence sources.

He was quoted as saying the target was “the most active terrorist in the world,” adding that the militant “thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing.”

According to reports, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed that the strike resulted in the death of al-Minuki along with several associates during an attack on an Islamic State facility in the region.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) later released aerial footage showing the bombing operation, according to reports.

Al-Minuki had previously been designated a “specially designated global terrorist” in 2023, with US authorities at the time stating he was involved in providing operational direction and funding within the group’s global network.

According to reports, officials said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to counter extremist groups in Africa’s Sahel region, where instability and armed insurgencies have expanded in recent years.
