UN Rapporteur Accuses Systematic Torture of Palestinian Hostages in Israeli Custody
(MENAFN) Francesca Albanese has accused Israeli authorities of using torture against Palestinian detainees in detention facilities and more broadly across the occupied territories.
Her remarks followed a New York Times investigation by columnist Nicholas Kristof, which reported allegations that abuse and sexual violence in Israeli custody had become systematic.
Albanese presented findings in a report titled Torture and Genocide, prepared for the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, examining conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967, with a focus on developments since Oct. 7, 2023.
The report claims that torture has been a longstanding element of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and argues that its alleged escalation since late 2023 indicates a coordinated policy involving collective punishment and retaliatory practices.
It also cites policies attributed to Itamar Ben-Gvir, alleging harsh detention measures for Palestinian prisoners, including prolonged restraints and psychological pressure tactics.
Beyond detention facilities, the report argues that Palestinians are subjected to coercive conditions through broader practices including displacement, blockade, restrictions on aid, and military operations in the occupied territories.
The findings conclude that these combined measures form what the report describes as a systematic effort to undermine Palestinian society, resilience, and presence in the region.
