UN Reports Relentless Civilian Attacks in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Civilian casualties and strikes on frontline responders in Lebanon have continued to be recorded on a daily basis even as a nearly month-long ceasefire remains nominally in place, UN humanitarian officials warned Thursday.

Among the most recent incidents, a series of drone strikes targeting vehicles in the Jiyeh area — roughly 20 kilometers south of Beirut — claimed the lives of at least eight people on Wednesday, including two children, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), citing figures provided by Lebanese authorities.

The human toll since the latest escalation began on March 2 has climbed to at least 2,896 killed — among them 200 children — with more than 8,000 others wounded, OCHA said, drawing on data from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

The displacement crisis has also deepened as the security situation continues to deteriorate. Nearly 130,000 people are now sheltering across 632 collective sites nationwide, with displacement numbers still rising.

Fresh evacuation orders were issued for eight villages across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa governorate, triggering further population movements, OCHA noted.

"Humanitarian partners report that both newly displaced families and those returning to shelters are contributing to the increase," the office said. "Insecurity and the extent of destruction continue to prevent safe and sustained returns."

Humanitarian access, while not fully blocked, remains severely hampered — particularly across southern Lebanon, where destroyed roads and bridges, unexploded ordnance, conflict debris, and persistent insecurity are delaying relief convoys and stalling the restoration of critical services, OCHA said.

Since the escalation began, a total of 132 humanitarian movements carrying essential supplies have been facilitated, the office added.
