Powerful Quake Jolts Eastern Coastline of Japan's Honshu

(MENAFN) A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted the eastern coastline of Japan's most densely populated island, Honshu, on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake's epicenter was pinpointed roughly 49 kilometers (30 miles) east-southeast of Ofunato in Iwate province, striking at 20:22 local time (11:22 GMT) and sending tremors across the region.

No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage had emerged at the time of publication. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning had been issued, offering an early measure of relief to coastal communities still scarred by the memory of past devastating waves.

Officials urged the public not to panic as monitoring efforts remained active across the affected zone.

The US Geological Survey is continuing to assess the full scope of the seismic event as authorities maintain heightened vigilance across the region.
