Xi Warns Trump of Possible China–US Clashes if Taiwan Issue Escalates

(MENAFN) According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that tensions between China and the United States could escalate into confrontation if the Taiwan issue is not handled carefully.

Xi made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, as reported by state media.

He described Taiwan as “the most important issue in China-US relations,” emphasizing that it directly affects the stability of bilateral ties.

“If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” Xi said.

He also stated that peace across the Taiwan Strait is “irreconcilable as fire and water” with Taiwan independence, adding that maintaining stability in the region serves as a key shared interest between both countries.

Xi and Trump are reported to have discussed several major topics during the meeting, including Taiwan, trade, tariffs, and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Trump, speaking earlier in the week, said he expected to raise the issue of Taiwan’s defense during his talks with Xi.
