Israeli Forces Raid Two Villages in Southern Syria, Detain Resident
(MENAFN) Israeli forces stormed two villages in southern Syria on Wednesday, conducting home raids and briefly detaining a local resident in what marks the latest in a series of incursions into Syrian territory.
A Syrian news agency reported that Israeli troops entered the village of Saida al-Golan in the southern Quneitra countryside, searching several homes before withdrawing from the area.
In a separate simultaneous operation, Israeli forces pushed into the village of Maariya in the Yarmouk Basin area of western Daraa countryside. According to the news agency, an Israeli patrol penetrated the village's western neighborhood, raided a residence, and detained a young male inhabitant — releasing him several hours later.
The ground incursions unfolded as Israeli reconnaissance aircraft conducted surveillance flights over the region, heightening alarm among local residents. Israeli forces also carried out overnight shelling between the towns of Abdin and Maariya in the Yarmouk Basin, the news agency reported.
The provocations come despite recent remarks by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who acknowledged that negotiations with Israel were facing difficulties — specifically over Israel's insistence on maintaining a permanent military presence on Syrian soil — while stopping short of declaring talks fully collapsed.
The raids form part of a broader pattern of Israeli military activity in Syria that intensified following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024. In the immediate aftermath of Assad's ouster, Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement null and void and moved to occupy the frontier buffer zone.
Since then, despite the new Syrian administration refraining from any hostile posture toward Israel, Israeli forces have conducted repeated airstrikes across Syria, killing civilians and destroying military infrastructure, equipment, and munitions stockpiles.
