BRICS Foreign Ministers to Convene in New Delhi

(MENAFN) India is set to host a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in New Delhi on May 14–15, bringing together senior diplomats from member states to discuss global geopolitical developments, including escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The meeting, chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, is expected to focus on preparing the agenda and draft outcome documents for the upcoming BRICS leaders’ summit scheduled for September, which India will host under its current presidency cycle.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to attend the talks and hold bilateral discussions with Indian officials, including Jaishankar, with broader coordination on preparations for future high-level engagements reportedly on the agenda.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will not be present, with Beijing citing scheduling conflicts. His absence coincides with overlapping international diplomatic activity, including a state visit by US President Donald Trump to China during the same period.

Iran is also expected to participate, with Foreign Ministry representatives confirming the attendance of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Discussions are expected to include regional security dynamics, particularly developments in the Middle East.

Reports indicate that tensions among BRICS members regarding regional conflicts may surface during the meetings, including differing positions on the Gaza situation and broader instability involving Iran and Gulf states.

The gathering is seen as a preparatory step toward defining the bloc’s collective diplomatic and economic priorities ahead of the September summit, with energy security and regional conflicts likely to dominate discussions.
