Israel Detains Senior UN Security Official at Tel Aviv Airport
(MENAFN) Israel briefly detained and interrogated a senior United Nations official upon his arrival at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, Israeli media reported, in an incident linked to his prior visit to the Gaza Strip.
An Israeli broadcaster reported late Tuesday that UN Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security Gilles Michaud was held for approximately 45 minutes following his arrival at the airport.
Michaud was questioned by the Shin Bet internal security agency regarding an official visit he had made to Gaza in August 2025 — a trip that had been fully coordinated in advance with Israeli authorities.
The newspaper, citing Israeli officials, characterized the episode as a "case of mistaken identity," noting that Michaud, a Canadian national, was released shortly thereafter. During the security screening, his passport was reportedly confiscated before he was escorted to a holding area and subjected to questioning over the Gaza visit.
In the wake of the incident, Michaud described his treatment as "unusual" for a senior UN official, stating it was unlike anything he had encountered in any other country. According to the broadcaster, the senior official subsequently intended to cancel his scheduled official meetings in Israel, though no further details were provided regarding the length or agenda of his visit.
