Palestinian Football Body Thanks Yamal for Flag Gesture
(MENAFN) The Palestinian Football Association expressed appreciation Tuesday to young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal after he showed support for Palestine during celebrations marking the club’s Spanish league triumph.
In a message posted on X, the association shared artwork carrying the Spanish phrase: “Desde Palestina… gracias, Lamine Yamal” (“From Palestine … thank you, Lamine Yamal”).
The image featured the 18-year-old winger holding a Palestinian flag alongside the logo of the Palestinian Football Association.
The reaction followed Yamal’s appearance during Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations, where he was seen waving the Palestinian flag from the club’s open-top parade bus among cheering supporters.
Reports said the player requested the flag from a fan before raising it during Sunday’s celebrations through the streets of Barcelona after the Catalan club secured its 29th league championship with a 2-0 victory over longtime rival Real Madrid in El Clasico.
Yamal later uploaded an image of himself carrying the Palestinian flag on Instagram, receiving widespread praise from many social media users.
Widely regarded as one of football’s most promising young stars, Yamal has previously shown support for humanitarian causes.
While many Arab and Muslim supporters welcomed the gesture, it also sparked criticism from pro-Israeli voices online, where some users argued that political messages should be kept separate from sporting celebrations.
Since being promoted to Barcelona’s senior squad in April 2023, Yamal has collected three Spanish league titles, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to reach that milestone as he continues to set new records.
During the title parade, the Spanish international also expressed gratitude to the fans who crowded the streets to celebrate the achievement.
