Mass Protest in Brussels Over Government Reforms
(MENAFN) Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Brussels on Tuesday in a nationwide protest against federal government reforms affecting pensions and wages.
According to Brussels-Ixelles police, about 40,000 people took part in the march, while trade unions estimated the turnout at roughly 75,000, as reported by a media outlet.
The protest began around 11:00 a.m. local time (09:00 GMT) near Gare du Nord station, with participants marching several kilometers through the city toward Gare du Midi.
Demonstrators expressed opposition to planned changes involving pension rules, automatic wage indexation, and increasing energy costs. Trade unions accused the government of weakening core elements of Belgium’s social protection system.
The action also caused widespread disruption to public transport services across the country, with reduced operations reported on the STIB, De Lijn, and TEC networks.
Air travel was also affected, with Brussels and Charleroi airports operating at reduced capacity throughout the day due to the strike.
