Turkish Official Warns Black Sea Security Has Major Regional Impact
(MENAFN) Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay said on Tuesday that developments in the Black Sea region have “enormous” implications for regional and global security.
Speaking at the 10th Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum in Bucharest, Romania, he described the Black Sea as a wider basin that extends beyond its coastal states, arguing that its strategic relevance goes well beyond the countries directly surrounding it.
He pointed to the involvement of Albania and Greece as members of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, which is based in Istanbul, as an example of the region’s broader geopolitical framework.
Bozay also warned that any change in the security balance of the Black Sea would have significant consequences for the Mediterranean, stressing that such ripple effects apply across all areas of security.
Addressing regional cooperation, he said Türkiye and the European Union are working on expanding joint projects related to connectivity.
However, he added that connectivity should not be viewed in a single-direction framework, saying: “But connectivity is not a linear thing,” and stressing that it “should have north-south, east-west, west-east connections.”
