Lithuania Approves Deployment for Strait of Hormuz Security Mission
(MENAFN) According to reports, Lithuania’s State Defense Council has approved a proposal to send personnel to an international maritime security operation aimed at safeguarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
The president’s office stated that the council agreed to deploy “up to 40 soldiers and civilian employees of the national defense system” as part of broader allied efforts focused on maintaining safe passage in the strategically important waterway.
In addition, the council reportedly recommended that the government move quickly to adjust the parliamentary mandate that governs Lithuania’s involvement in overseas military operations.
Any final deployment will still require approval from the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas.
The president’s office also noted that Lithuania is prepared to extend logistical assistance and make its military infrastructure available if requested by the United States, indicating broader support roles beyond troop deployment.
The initiative reflects growing international attention on maritime security in the region, with allied countries coordinating efforts to protect shipping routes through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
