Starmer Faces Internal Labour Pressure After Electoral Setbacks
(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure from within the Labour Party, with reports indicating that up to 70 Members of Parliament have either called for his resignation or urged him to establish a timeline for stepping down.
The internal tensions come in the aftermath of a challenging set of election results for Labour across different parts of the United Kingdom, prompting renewed debate among senior party figures about the party’s direction under Starmer’s leadership.
Starmer has acknowledged that his government has made some mistakes but insisted it has made what he described as the “right major political decisions.” He has also said he intends to prove critics wrong as speculation about his political future continues to intensify.
According to reports, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among several senior ministers who have privately encouraged the prime minister to consider setting out a possible timetable for departure from office.
The pressure follows a series of electoral setbacks, including a significant defeat for Labour in Wales and continued dominance by the Scottish National Party in Scotland, which secured another term in devolved government.
These elections, which covered Scotland, Wales, and numerous local councils in England, were viewed as the most significant political test since Labour’s landslide general election victory in 2024.
At the same time, Reform UK recorded notable gains, winning over a thousand council seats and further expanding its presence in local government following earlier advances in previous elections.
The results have intensified scrutiny of Labour’s performance and leadership strategy, adding to internal divisions over how the party should respond moving forward.
