Italy condemns repeated attacks against Christians in Middle East

(MENAFN) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized what he described as repeated and “unacceptable” acts targeting Christians in parts of the Middle East, blaming Israeli forces and settlers for a growing number of incidents.

Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Tajani said violence and intimidation directed at Christians in Lebanon, Israel and the occupied West Bank had reached alarming levels.

Responding to questions about attacks, insults, and actions targeting Christians and Christian values, Tajani said: “I condemned the violence against Christians in Lebanon, Israel, and the West Bank. These incidents are far too many and unacceptable. This also includes disrespectful behavior and insults against sacred values that offend the sensitivities of Catholics. No one should believe they have the right to insult the beliefs of others.”

The Italian minister also noted that EU foreign ministers did not discuss possible sanctions against far-right Israeli ministers during the Brussels meeting.

Addressing the war in Ukraine, Tajani stressed that Europe would need to play a decisive role in any future settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.

“Without Europe, a peace agreement with Moscow cannot be reached,” he said.

He pointed to the European Union’s military and political backing for Ukraine, including sanctions imposed on Russia and preparations for additional restrictive measures.

Tajani also suggested that easing sanctions on Russia could eventually become part of a broader peace framework, emphasizing that Europe must participate “in the final stage” of negotiations.

Earlier Monday, Tajani rejected remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder could mediate future talks between the EU and Russia.

According to Tajani, any representative negotiating on behalf of the European Union would be selected by the bloc itself rather than by Moscow.
