UN Reports Surge in Israeli Army Activity in Lebanon Despite Truce

(MENAFN) The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon says it has documented a sharp rise in military activity in the country over a three-day period, amid continued tensions along the border.

According to a UN spokesperson, UNIFIL observed widespread exchanges of fire across its area of operations.

"Between Friday and today, UNIFIL has continued to record extensive military activity across this area of operations," said UN spokesperson Farhan Haq during a briefing.

He added that peacekeepers recorded “more than 1,296 trajectories or projectiles attributed to the Israeli Defense Forces, and 64 trajectories or projectiles attributed to Hezbollah” over the same period.

UN officials also said that peacekeepers continue to face movement restrictions on the ground, including repeated denial of access to certain areas. In one incident on Saturday, an Israeli tank and bulldozer reportedly blocked UN personnel in Sector West.

UNIFIL stressed that all parties are required to ensure unrestricted access for peacekeepers so they can carry out their mandate.

The UN also cited humanitarian assessments indicating worsening conditions in Lebanon despite the ceasefire. According to the briefing, “more than 100 strikes were reported in the past 24 hours alone, while 87 people were killed over the weekend.”

Officials also warned that funding shortages are threatening humanitarian operations under a $308 million flash appeal covering the period from March to May, noting that essential services such as health care, water, and sanitation could be disrupted without full financial support.

Although a ceasefire was announced on April 17 and later extended to May 17, reports indicate that Israeli strikes have continued on a near-daily basis in Lebanon.

Since early March, ongoing violence has reportedly resulted in at least 2,869 deaths, 8,730 injuries, and the displacement of more than 1.6 million people—roughly one-fifth of the population—according to official figures cited in the report.
