Germany's Inflation Climbs to 2.9 Percent in April
(MENAFN) Germany's annual inflation rate climbed to 2.9 percent in April, accelerating from 2.7 percent in March, as surging energy costs tied to the Iran war pushed consumer prices higher for the second straight month, according to official figures published Tuesday by federal statistical authority Destatis.
Ruth Brand, president of Destatis, attributed the consecutive monthly rise directly to war-driven energy market disruptions, underscoring the real-world toll on everyday households across Europe's largest economy.
"Consumers are particularly feeling the persistent price pressure regarding motor fuels," she added.
The data paints a stark picture of energy-led price acceleration. Overall energy product costs surged 10.1 percent in April 2026 compared to the same month a year prior — a sharp escalation from the 7.2 percent annual rise recorded in March. Motor fuel prices delivered the sharpest blow, soaring 26.2 percent year-on-year, while heating oil costs nearly doubled in relative terms, rocketing 55.1 percent compared to April 2025 levels.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in April alone, adding further strain to household budgets already under pressure from prolonged geopolitical instability and tightening energy supplies linked to the ongoing conflict.
