Spain Urges EU to Build Independent Military Amid US Security Doubts

(MENAFN) Spain’s foreign minister on Monday urged the European Union to strengthen its own military capabilities, arguing that growing uncertainty over US security guarantees could encourage rival powers such as Russia.

Jose Manuel Albares said Europe should no longer depend fully on Washington for its defense needs, according to reports.

“We cannot be waking up every morning wondering what the US will do next,” Albares said. “Our citizens deserve better.”

His comments come amid a wider shift in tone among European governments, as they reassess the strength of transatlantic ties in light of ongoing tensions linked to the Iran crisis and discussions around a possible return of Donald Trump to the US presidency.

Albares framed the moment as a critical juncture for Europe’s strategic direction and independence.

“This is the moment of the sovereignty and independence of Europe. The Americans are inviting us to that,” he said. “We have to be free of dependence. Free of dependence means to be free of coercion, whether it comes to tariffs or the use of military threat. And free of the consequences of someone else’s decisions.”
