Armenia Rules Out Referendum on EAEU, EU Membership Choice
(MENAFN) Nikol Pashinyan said Monday that Armenia has no plans to hold a referendum on whether to remain in the Eurasian Economic Union or move toward closer ties with the European Union.
Speaking according to state media, Pashinyan said a referendum would only be considered if there were a clear and objective necessity, adding that such conditions do not currently exist.
“We will hold a referendum at the moment when there is an objective need for it. My assessment is that there is simply no such objective necessity,” he said, as reported.
His comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested on Saturday that Armenia could consider a referendum on its geopolitical direction, and indicated that Moscow would accept a “gentle, intelligent and mutually beneficial divorce” if Yerevan opted for closer integration with the EU.
Pashinyan rejected the analogy, saying interstate relations should not be compared to personal relationships.
“I do not agree with that formulation. Armenia is guided in its interstate relations by an interstate logic,” he said.
He also reaffirmed that Armenia remains a full member of the Eurasian Economic Union and continues to take part in its decision-making processes.
