Georgia Elects New Patriarch of Orthodox Church
(MENAFN) The Georgian Orthodox Church has chosen a new spiritual leader, according to the country’s national broadcaster, following the death of its long-serving patriarch.
On Monday, the church’s expanded governing council elected Metropolitan Shio, aged 57, as the 142nd catholicos-patriarch, securing 22 votes in the internal ballot.
A total of 33 members of the Holy Synod took part in the vote, with one ballot declared invalid, according to the report.
The official enthronement ceremony is set to take place on May 12 at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the most significant religious sites in the country.
The election follows the death of the previous leader of the church, Ilia II, who passed away on March 17 at the age of 93 after decades in office.
