Irish Foreign Minister Calls on EU to Take Action on Gaza Situation
(MENAFN) The European Union should not remain passive in the face of worsening conditions in Gaza and the West Bank, according to Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee, who called Monday for stronger EU action.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, McEntee said EU member states must act rather than remain “bystanders,” particularly as the situation in Gaza and the West Bank continues to deteriorate.
She reiterated Ireland’s position calling for sanctions against violent occupiers in the West Bank and those who support them.
"It is my view that the EU needs to act, that we cannot continue to be bystanders, particularly when it comes to Gaza, particularly when it comes to the escalating situation in the West Bank," she said.
McEntee also said she would push for the suspension of the trade components of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, arguing that the EU must ensure its policies align with international law.
"It's been made very clear that this kind of trade is illegal, and so I'll be working with colleagues ... the longer this is delayed, the longer this goes on, the less likely Israel is likely to change its behavior."
She further stated that violence in the region has not subsided but has instead intensified, warning that conditions in Gaza continue to worsen.
